Weekend Preview: Baseball, Lacrosse and Softball All On the Road

Baseball

After winning two out of three at home against the University of South Florida last weekend, the Diamond Hoyas (17-9, 3-3 Big East) will travel to St. Mary’s this weekend for another three-game series. In the decisive third game against USF on Saturday, freshman catcher Nick Collins drove in three runs to lead the Blue and Gray to a win over the Bulls. GU looks to bring its Big East record to above .500 this weekend against The Gael of St. Mary’s.

Softball

After winning eight straight games, the Georgetown softball team (13-22, 3-2 Big East) dropped two in a row against Notre Dame on Wednesday in a doubleheader at home. The Blue and Gray will look to bounce back this weekend at Rutgers in a three-game series against the Scarlet Knights. Captain Shikara Lowe will need to have a strong offensive performance if the team wants to maintain its winning record in the conference.

Men’s Lacrosse Squanders Lead in Loss to Villanova

The men’s lacrosse team’s rough season took another turn for the worse on Wednesday night as the visiting Villanova Wildcats (3-6,2-0) scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to leave Multi-Sport Facility 8-6 winners. The loss drops the Hoyas to 4-6 under first-year head coach Kevin Warne, and an NCAA tournament drought that stretches back to 2007 appears likely to continue.

GU was without captain Brian Casey — who was sidelined with a leg injury — but fellow senior Travis Comeau filled in nicely at attack with two goals. Redshirt sophomore Jake Haley, who has replaced opening day starter Alex Joyce as the go-to man in between the pipes, made 13 saves, but it was not enough as the offense was non-existent down the stretch.

Things were looking good for the home team when Reilly O’Connor, who has been Georgetown’s best offensive player this season, scored his 16th goal of the season to give the Blue and Gray a 5-2 lead with 10:16 left in the third quarter. It didn’t take long for Villanova to tie the game up with 3:09 to go in the third before O’Connor scored Georgetown’s final goal a minute later.

Three Stars: O’Connor Leads Hoyas to Men’s Lacrosse Win

Reilly O’Connor – Men’s Lacrosse

O’Connor, a sophomore attack, led the Hoyas to a 17-12 win over Marquette on Friday.  The sophomore had three goals and three assists, giving him a game-high six points.  He scored in the first quarter to help put Georgetown then recorded two of his assists and two goals to help put the game out of reach in the Blue and Gray’s seven-goal fourth quarter.

Shikara Lowe – Softball

The senior catcher singled in a run in Wednesday’s 5-2 victory over George Mason and doubled in another in the Hoya’s 3-2 win over Towson on Thursday.  This is Lowe’s third consecutive game with at least one RBI, and she extended her hitting streak to four games.  The Blue and Gray are on an eight game winning streak.

Kelly Comolli – Women’s Tennis

On Thursday, Comolli won at second singles 6-3, 6-2 and with Madeline Jaeger won second doubles 8-6 to contribute to a Georgetown victory over Seton Hall.  On Saturday against Morgan State, the junior won 6-0, 6-0 in singles and 8-1 in doubles as the Hoyas won their fourth straight match and fifth of their last seven.

Baseball Takes Two of Three From South Florida To Even Up Big East Record

The Georgetown baseball team (17-9, 3-3 Big East) won two of three against South Florida in a series that featured two extra-inning games and an astounding outing from GU pitcher Matt Hollenbeck. The Blue and Gray took Wednesday’s game 1-0 in 13 innings before USF won its own extra-inning game 10-6 on Friday. However, the Hoyas rallied to win the series with a 7-2 victory on Saturday as Hollenbeck held the Bulls hitless for 5 2/3 of his six innings pitched.

Wednesday’s game saw an unlikely star emerge as freshman Evan Ryan scored the winning run in the 13th. The game was dominated by pitching as Georgetown starter Jack Vander Linden gave up just three hits in seven innings before and reliever Tim Davis put in an excellent shift, going 3 2/3 innings and giving up only one hit. Davis — who earned the win — entered with the bases loaded in the 10th inning but was able to escape the jam by forcing a key USF groundball.

As good as GU’s pitching was, the Bulls’ pitching staff matched the Hoyas’ blow-for-blow the entire game. Starter Jimmy Herget gave up only three hits in eight innings, and USF held strong until reliever Nolan Thomas’ wild pitch in the 13th inning allowed the pinch runner Ryan to score. The run was only the second of the season for Ryan, a specialist on the base path who has had zero at-bats this year.

Orange Prevail in Elite Eight, Set for Atlanta

In a battle of two Big East teams, Syracuse (30-9) trounced Marquette (26-8) 55-39 in an ugly NCAA East Regional final at Verizon Center on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 4-seeded Orange, who defeated Indiana in the Sweet 16 Thursday, again flustered their opponent with aggressive defense, holding the Golden Eagles to a miserable 22.6 percent shooting from the floor and containing junior forward Davante Gardner, who had been a thorn in Syracuse’s side during the team’s only regular season meeting, to 14 points. Hoyas in the Pros: Summers Gets Second 10-Day Contract, Wright Back in the D-League

Roy Hibbert, Indiana Pacers – 11.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.7 blocks
Indiana holds a 5 ½ game lead over the Bulls in the Central Division and a ½ game lead over the Knicks for the second seed in the Eastern Conference. Hibbert has recorded a double-double in four straight games including notching 28 points and 13 rebounds in a 100-91 win over Houston on Wednesday night. Roy is fourth in the league in rejections behind Tim Duncan, Serge Ibaka and Milwaukee’s Larry Sanders.

Greg Monroe, Detroit Pistons – 15.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists
In his last two trips to South Beach to play El Heat, Monroe has averaged 27 of his team’s 88.5 points to go along with 13.5 boards. This past Saturday, Detroit broke a ten-game losing streak with a one-point win over Charlotte despite the fact that Greg only contributed six points. However, he did have eight assists — the most the skilled passer has had in a game since early December.
