Highlanders Shock Hoyas in Double Overtime

The season started off with disappointment. The Georgetown men’s basketball team fell to Radford this afternoon in its home opener, dropping the double overtime decision 82-80. With 10 seconds left on the clock and leading by one, the Hoyas needed one stop to seal the victory. Yet they were not able to stop Radford junior guard RashunDavis, who sank a late three to give Radford a lead. Davis finished a game with 28 points.

The highlight of today’s game came when the Hoyas, trailing by five, managed to score five consecutive points in the final 33 seconds to force overtime. Sophomore forward Isaac Copeland buried a three. After the inbound, sophomore guard L.J. Peak quickly stole the ball and added two more to tie the game and earned the and-one free throw. Unfortunately, he missed the free throw, which led to overtime. He finished the day 1-4 from the line. The Hoyas were 71% from the free throw line today.

Obviously, the Highlanders were not the same team that lost to the Hoyas last year 49-76. This year’s team tallied 15 offensive rebounds, making the difference in the game.

Four layers were in double figures today. Senior center Bradley Hayes led the team with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera had 15 points with 5 assists. Sophomore guard Isaac Copeland and freshman center Jessie Govan both had 11 points.

The Hoyas will face Maryland, the 3rd ranked basketball program in the nation next Tuesday.
