It looks like there will be an heir to Markel Starks’ throne after all.

Tre Campbell, a junior point guard from local St. John’s High School, verbally committed to the Hoyas on Wednesday night following an offer from Head Coach John Thompson III last week.

Although currently ranked just 121st overall in the Class of 2014, Campbell also received offers from a host of other quality programs — including Maryland, Pittsburgh, Virginia Commonwealth and Xavier — and fills a necessary void for a program that going into 2013-14 will feature just one pure floor general on its roster.

Campbell marks the second recruit in the 2014 class for JT III, who previously received a verbal from 6-foot-9 forward Isaac Copeland in early March.

The most recent commitment on Wednesday was made public via Campbell’s personal Twitter account, with a tweet at 9:25 p.m. reading simply, “I have officially Committed to Georgetown University.”

An interview with Scouts.com revealed a bit more enthusiasm on the 6-foot-2 guard’s part, though, as Campbell told Brian Snow, “I have always wanted to go to Georgetown. I didn’t want to commit on the spot when they offered me last week, and I went back up there today and committed after I toured the campus.”

But while running the show on the Hilltop may have been Campbell’s dream, it was a far ways away from reality until the last few months. According to Casual Hoya, the District native was widely regarded as a mid-major prospect even through this past winter, but a stellar showing in AAU in the spring looks to have boosted his stock.

Still, it’s a bit of a strange fit for a Georgetown program that ranked just 301st nationally in adjusted tempo in 2012-13, according to KenPom.com. Campbell is a player that reportedly likes to take players on one-on-one, a dimension of the Blue and Gray’s attack that — save for the occasional Starks spurt — is far from a focal point.

Whether he’ll actually be given the freedom to jump-start the offense as he’s hoping, meanwhile, remains to be seen. But a player who can help Georgetown to keep up with the Dunk Cities of the world will likely be a welcome sight for the Hoya faithful.

Campbell’s dedication to the defensive side of the ball, on the other hand, is classic JT III. And, in the end, if he can contribute in anywhere near the same way as the last St. John’s grad to make it to Verizon Center — former four-year standout Chris Wright — Campbell should be just fine.

Last week, Georgetown released an animated video rendering of the proposed Intercollegiate Athletic Center. The IAC — which will be built adjacent to McDonough Arena, in the space currently occupied by the tennis courts — will include new locker rooms, practice courts and meeting areas for Georgetown student-athletes.

“The Intercollegiate Athletics Center is essential to assuring the continued competitiveness of Georgetown’s athletics program,” Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed told guhoyas.com in February. “Opening the IAC will benefit every athlete and program at Georgetown well into the future.”

The University’s fundraising aim for the athletics facility is $60 million.

Video posted below, after the jump:

Not too shabby, huh? I thought the awkward athlete cut-outs were an especially nice touch.

Two days after the NFL draft, Georgetown senior linebacker Robert McCabe earned his own call to the professional football ranks Monday, signing as a free agent for the Miami Dolphins. McCabe, the Hoya defense’s unquestioned leader and standout, will receive an opportunity to become just the second Georgetown player in the modern era to play in the NFL, joining 2003 alumnus Alex Buzbee, who made the Washington Redskins’ roster in 2007.

Despite the Blue and Gray’s paltry 5-6 record and 2-3 mark in the Patriot League in the 2012 season, McCabe excelled in his senior year, posting 159 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks en route to being named the Patriot League defensive player of the year and a finalist for the Football Championship Series national defensive player of the year. His All-American performance put NFL scouts on watch, prompting Miami to sign him as one of four FCS players given a tryout for the team. Although the deal was announced Monday, McCabe said that he actually signed on Saturday.

“The [Dolphins] had been in contact me throughout the draft,” McCabe told guhoyas.com. “Then they called me right after the draft to sign me and I think this provides me with my best opportunity.”

Although McCabe has taken the first step toward playing in the NFL, the road only grows tougher as he will have to compete with and outplay other rookies and practice squad members desperate to earn a coveted spot on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster.

Miami, which went 7-9 last season, are expected to start Dannell Ellerbe, Philip Wheeler and Koa Misi at linebacker in its 4-3 defensive scheme next season. The Dolphins also stocked up on linebackers in the draft with third overall pick Dion Jordan from Oregon and fourth-round pick Jelani Jenkins from Florida. However, Jordan, a pass-rushing specialist, is tabbed to start opposite Pro Bowler Cameron Wake as a defensive end, leaving a potential roster spot open for McCabe’s taking.

The competition to make the Dolphins’ roster begins this weekend for McCabe, as rookie minicamp takes place May 4-6.

Baseball

Georgetown’s baseball team (22-15, 5-7 Big East) travels to Louisville this weekend for a key Big East matchup. Last weekend, the Blue and Gray dropped two of three at Seton Hall, so this series is important if the Hoyas hope to turn around their recent road struggles. Against the Pirates, GU gave up 20 runs in just two games, but five innings of scoreless pitching from freshman Matt Smith on Sunday helped the team avoid a sweep. Look for junior right fielder Christian Venditti and senior center fielder Justin Leeson to step up at the plate this weekend as the team tries supply some much-needed offense.

Softball

Georgetown’s softball team (19-28, 8-8 Big East) will accompany the baseball team to Kentucky this weekend as they look to move above .500 in the conference against softball powerhouse Louisville. Despite solid run production and strong pitching, the Hoyas won only one of its games last weekend at Big East opponent Providence, so a series win this weekend would give the Hoyas a huge momentum boost with the conference tournament nearing.

Men’s Lacrosse

After falling just short of a victory against No. 3 Syracuse on Senior Day last weekend, the GU men’s lacrosse team (5-8, 2-3 Big East) is in serious need of a strong performance in their regular season finale at Rutgers this weekend. Last weekend, down 9-6 with 2:01 remaining, senior Dan McKinney ended a Blue and Gray scoring drought with a crucial goal. At the 1:13 mark, sophomore Charles McCormick found the back of the net again for the Hoyas, but GU was unable to complete the comeback and ultimately fell 9-8 to the Orange. Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. this weekend in New Jersey.

Women’s Lacrosse

The Georgetown’s women’s lacrosse team (11-3, 5-1 Big East) will try to finish off its remarkable regular season this weekend with two home games against Big East opponents Connecticut and Syracuse. Last Sunday marked the first time this season that the Blue and Gray have been held to fewer than ten goals on offense, and it took a goal in the last minute of the game from senior Rosie Corcoran to finish off Villanova, 6-5. Sophomore Caroline Tarzian — who leads the team with 30 goals on the season — will need to be at the top of her game this weekend if the Hoyas hope to finish the regular season the right way. Georgetown’s first game at home in four weeks is set for this Friday at 4 p.m. against Connecticut.

Shikara Lowe – Softball

The senior captain had five RBIs and three runs in a weekend series against Providence College. In the second game of the weekend, Lowe hit a three-run home run — her fourth of the season — in the fifth inning to put the Hoyas up 5-1 in an eventual 7-5 win. In the rubber match on Sunday, the senior scored in the second inning after leading off with a double and then scored another run after drawing a walk in the fifth inning in the 6-5 defeat. Georgetown currently sits in fifth place in the Big East with six conference games remaining in the regular season.

Dan McKinney – Men’s Lacrosse

The senior scored two goals in Georgetown’s 9-8 loss to No. 3 Syracuse in the final home game of his collegiate career. McKinney scored early to give the Hoyas a 2-0 lead, and the teams exchanged goals until the Orange eventually took a 9-6 advantage. With two minutes remaining in the game, McKinney ended a scoring drought with his second goal of the game, bringing the Blue and Gray to within two. GU would score one more, but could not close in on Syracuse in the narrow loss.

Rosie Corcoran – Women’s Lacrosse

The senior netted two goals and had one assist in Georgetown’s 13-5 rout of Rutgers on Friday for their fourth consecutive win. Her two goals came in succession in the first half, as the Hoyas opened a commanding 9-1 lead. In a close victory over Villanova on Sunday, Corcoran had two assists and scored the go-ahead goal with just over nine minutes remaining, giving Georgetown a 6-5 victory and extending their winning streak to five games. The Blue and Gray currently sit in third in the conference.

Megan Hyson – Softball

The sophomore pitched a two-hitter en route to a Hoya win over Big East rival Syracuse on Saturday. After giving up a homerun in the first inning, Hyson held the Orange hitless for five consecutive innings, giving up only a single in the seventh before earning a complete game win. The sophomore fanned 10 batters, her second most of the season, in the 5-1 victory. In the Blue and Gray’s win earlier in the day, Hyson had a key two RBI double after an 11-pitch at bat. Georgetown took the overall series, defeating Syracuse in two out of three games.

Jack Vander Linden – Baseball

Vander Linden, a redshirt sophomore, started the opener of the weekend series against St. John’s and pitched eight shutout innings as GU won 3-0. He allowed only four hits and one walk while striking out four. The sophomore had a string of eight consecutive outs after getting out of trouble in the first inning. His record now stands at 3-1 this season. This was the sole game the Blue and Gray were able to take from St. John’s in the series.

Sophia Thomas – Women’s Lacrosse

Thomas, a senior, contributed six goals over two games this weekend — three in the Hoyas’ 13-7 win over Marquette Friday and three in the 13-12 loss to No. 5 Notre Dame Sunday. In the defeat, the midfielder scored to tie the game at halftime 4-4, and later, with 39 seconds left on the clock in the final period, Thomas tallied her third goal of the game to bring the Hoyas within two. Ultimately, Georgetown’s rally fell short as the clock expired, but the Maryland native continues to be a standout for GU. Last week, Thomas was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll and she is also a candidate for the Tewaarton Trophy — given to the best American college lacrosse player.

Last Saturday, the Georgetown men’s lacrosse team (5-6, 2-1) took down Big East opponent St. John’s by a score of 14-13. Down 8-5 early in the second quarter, the Hoyas fought back to tie the game at 13-13 with 10.2 seconds remaining in regulation. In overtime, senior midfielder Dan McKinney scored with 3:24 left, avenging the team’s overtime loss to St. John’s from last season. The Blue and Gray look to continue their momentum and stay above .500 in conference play this weekend at No. 4 Notre Dame.

Women’s Lacrosse

This weekend, the women’s lacrosse team (8-2, 3-0) will take to the road, traveling to Marquette on Friday and Notre Dame on Sunday for two important matchups. With a season-high four goals last week, Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Sophia Thomas will need to continue her offensive success if the team hopes to remain unbeaten in the conference. The Hoyas have not been held to under 10 goals in a game this season, and thanks to strong play from junior goalie M.J. Coyle, GU is playing some of their its lacrosse of the season with only a few weeks until the Big East tournament. The game at Marquette begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, and the matchup on Sunday at Notre Dame will begin after the men’s game.

Baseball

After a 9-1 victory over crosstown rival George Washington on Tuesday, the Georgetown baseball team (20-11, 4-3) will host Big East opponent St. John’s this weekend in an important series. Last weekend, the Hoyas struggled at St. Mary’s, scoring only two runs in their first two games. Sunday, a double from senior center fielder Justin Leeson gave Georgetown a 7-6 win in the 11th inning. The team will need strong pitching if it hopes to win the series at home this weekend, and Coach Wilk believes that pitching is what differentiates this year’s team from last year’s. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. on Friday.

Roy Hibbert, Indiana Pacers – 11.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.6 blocks

The Knickerbockers have taken a two-game lead over Hibbert and the Pacers for the No. 2 seed in the East which means that a match-up with either Atlanta or Chicago is Indiana’s likely first-round draw. Last Saturday, Roy marked his return to Verizon Center with 25 points and 10 rebounds, but the Wizards (who would maybe be in the playoffs if John Wall had been healthy all year) beat down Indiana, 104-85. There are three games left in the regular season for the Pacers, including a huge trip to Madison Square Garden on Sunday. A win would put the Pacers a game back of New York with just a trip to Boston and a meeting with Philadelphia at home remaining. New York closes out in Charlotte and at home to Atlanta. It doesn’t really matter though, as nobody from the East will beat El Heat.

Greg Monroe, Detroit Pistons, 16.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists

At 27-52, the Pistons are tied for the fifth worst record in the league; however Monroe continues to perform well as the 22-year-old is one of the league’s most promising youngsters. With the help of an improved Andre Drummond, a lottery pick and a proven veteran free agent, I fully expect that Monroe could average 20 points and 12 boards within the next few seasons. Drummond had a career high 29 points and Monroe had 23 himself in Detroit’s 111-104 victory over Cleveland this past Wednesday. Surround these two post presences with some shooters and Detroit isn’t going to struggle to find offense. If you are a fan of NBA games that really don’t matter, the Pistons host the Bobcats tonight at 7:30.

Jeff Green, Boston Celtics, 12.8 points, 3.8 rebounds

Since the beginning of March, Green has averaged better than 17 points and five rebounds a game for a Celtic team that is locked in on the No. 7 seed in the East and a blockbuster first-round showdown with the Knicks. Green has firmly cemented himself as a starter and has been a savior of Boston’s season after Rondo went down with a torn ACL. If he is not the NBA’s comeback player of the year I will lose what little faith I have in the league’s higher-ups. If you are a fan of good basketball that kind of matters, the Celtics are in Miami tonight.

DaJuan Summers, Los Angeles Clippers – 1.0 points, 1.0 rebounds, 0.5 assists

DaJuan has not played in nine straight games; I’m honestly not certain why he is on the Clippers roster, but props to him.

Chris Wright, Iowa Energy – 16.1 points, 6.8 assists 4.1 rebounds

Wright had a big week with 24 and 23 points respectively in wins against the Tulsa 66ers and the Sioux Falls Skyforce. The Energy ended 2013 on a season-high three game winning streak, but 14-36 was sadly not good enough for a playoff spot.

Henry Sims, Eerie Bayhawks – 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds

Eerie just barely missed out on the playoffs, but Sims had a promising season that saw him make it to the NBA. If he puts in a lot of off-season work, Hank could make an opening day roster next season.

Hollis Thompson, Tulsa 66ers – 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds

Thompson and the 66ers won their opening playoff game over the Canton Charge, 118-99. Hollis played just 2:57 and did not register any stats. HE SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN SCHOOL.

Michael Sweetney, Bayamon Puerto Rico – 17.8 points, 9 rebounds, 3.5 assists

Listed at 6’8” and 288 pounds, Sweetney has been feasting on the weak low-post defenses of the Puerto Rican league.

Brandon Bowman, Galil Gilboa, Israel – 5.0 points, 2.8 rebounds

Managing Editor Victoria Edel weighs in on why being a fan feels so good but hurts so bad

As I exited the subway in midtown Manhattan and made my way to Penn Station to head back to Georgetown after Easter break, I was surrounded by one of the things I hate the most — Yankees fans. Everywhere. They were taking the D train to the Bronx for Yankees Opening Day.

Luckily, there were a handful of Mets fans entering Penn Station with me, heading out to Queens to see the Amazins’ start a season that will likely be anything but that. As I watched one little kid talk to his friend about how they’re the “M-E-T-S — Mets, Mets, Mets!” I couldn’t help but feel bad for that boy. He didn’t know what awaited him — the gut-wrenching losses, the lingering injuries, the incomprehensible trades, the nightmares of Carlos Beltran strike outs. Being a Mets fan is hard and depressing.

But let’s be honest — being a fan of any team is hard and depressing, even a fan of the 27-time World Series Champion New York Yankees, who aren’t exactly primed for number 28.

In every sport, one team wins each year, and, statistically speaking, it’s probably not going to be the one you’re rooting for. Yet I believe it’s this very hopeless sense of failure at the end of the season that most fans experience that keeps us coming back for more.

I live and die by the Mets, the New York Giants and — ever since coming to Georgetown — the men’s basketball team. With the exception of two miraculous Giants playoff runs, those teams haven’t done so well. As a reader of this paper, you don’t need me to remind you how Georgetown’s season ended. The Giants had an atrocious December campaign that left them out of the playoffs. The lone highlights of the Mets 2012 season were Johan Santana’s June no-hitter — a game I’ll never forget but one that injured his arm severely — and R.A. Dickey’s unbelievable Cy Young run. They finished seven games under .500, missing the playoffs for the sixth straight year.

With stats like that, how could I possibly have been so excited for Opening Day? One answer is that the other teams bummed me out so much that I need another team to believe in. Even if it’s the Mets, a team that no one should ever believe. Maybe we’ll finish above .500.

Here’s how it works: By August, I’ll be done with them (the Mets, historically, fall apart after the All-Star break, no matter how well they start the season). Thankfully by then I’ll have football to look forward to. When the Giants start again in September, I’ll once again willingly hand over my hopes and dreams to Eli Manning, the Mets woes having helped me forget how he mistreated me last autumn. And when Georgetown hits that Verizon Center court again? I’ll be in the student section jumping up and down with the rest of the Hoya faithful, the team’s loss to FGCU and my horrible bracket only a distant memory. And next April, when those seasons will have fallen apart, I’ll be excited for the Orange and Blue again.

This is the only way I can make sense of the lunacy that is being a sports fan and investing myself in teams that let me down time and time again.

Caring a lot about sports is inherently irrational — crying when the Mets fell to the Yankees in the 2000 World Series, screaming when the Giants conquered the Patriots in the Super Bowl (twice) and storming the court when we beat Syracuse are all ridiculous things to do. I’m not on the team. I’ve never thrown a runner out at third, caught a touchdown pass or made a three-point shot. When I’m sitting in my living room (or illicitly watching from a Lau cubicle) they can’t even hear my yells. Whether or not I wear my Michael Strahan jersey has no logical effect on the outcome of a Giants playoff game. I shouldn’t be so emotionally invested in whether or not a large rubber ball goes through a metal hoop, but I am. We all are.

When my high school history teacher explained Marxism to us, she told us how sports (Marx would argue) are a tool of those in powers used to distract the people they control. You can’t rage against the machine if you’re raging against George Steinbrenner. I felt kind of dumb, as I was enraptured at the time by the Vancouver Olympics. Did liking sports — intensely, passionately, irrationally — make me dumb? I don’t think so. It makes me human.

I live and die by that old Mets slogan — Ya Gotta Believe — even, and maybe especially, when I know I shouldn’t.

1. Villanova (4-6, 3-0)

All six of the Wildcats’ losses have come to ranked teams, but they’ve been perfect through their conference schedule with victories over Syracuse, Georgetown and Rutgers. Senior attack Jack Rice has an impressive 20 goals through the team’s first 10 games.

2. No. 4 Notre Dame (8-2, 2-1)

The Irish should be undefeated, but they are only 2-2 at home with losses to unranked Hofstra and St. John’s. Notre Dame has one of the best goalies in the country in senior John Kemp, and freshman attack Matt Kavanagh is leading the team in scoring with 19 goals and 10 assists. The Fighting Irish close out the regular season with the Hoyas, the Wildcats and the Orange.

3. Syracuse (7-2, 2-1)

In matchups with perennial Division I programs, the Orange have beaten UVA, Johns Hopkins and Princeton this season. Senior midfielder JoJo Marasco has scored 10 goals and dished out 20 assists so far this season for the sixth-highest scoring offense in the country. Syracuse faces Rutgers this weekend before participating an enormous upstate New York with Hobart midweek.

4. Georgetown (5-6, 2-1)

The Hoyas had a horrific start to the year in their non-conference schedule with losses to Lafayette and Mount St. Mary’s, but Kevin Warne’s boys have enjoyed a nice start to Big East play. The Blue and Gray should be looking at 3-0 in the conference, but they were shutout in the fourth quarter at home against the Wildcats in an 8-6 loss. Sophomore attack Reilly O’Connor has 34 points (17 goals, 17 assists), and junior faceoff man Tyler Knarr is seventh in the nation in ground balls per game with 7.64. A win in South Bend on Sunday would go a long way towards GU booking one of the four spots in the Big East tournament.

5. St. John’s (7-3, 2-2)

The Red Storm pulled of one of the upsets of the season when they beat then No. 1 Notre Dame 12-10 in South Bend. Junior attack Kieran McCardle leads the country with seven points per game; If I were a betting man, I would put my money on McCardle to win the Tewaaraton.

6. Providence (7-5, 1-3)

The Friars were 5-0 when they arrived at Multi-Sport Field on March, 16 and suffered a 16-8 loss. They have been on a free fall ever since with 10-9 victories over Rutgers and Bryant being the only high points. Juniors Sean Wright and Andrew Barton carry the offense with 42 and 38 points respectively.

7. Rutgers (0-4, 2-10)

The men’s basketball team’s recent controversy has done the lacrosse team a favor by stealing the spotlight in Piscataway. The Scarlet Knights are 2-10, but they managed to keep it close against Notre Dame and Villanova as they fell by only a single goal each game. Rutgers will look to play spoiler as they close their Big East schedule at Syracuse and at home against Georgetown.
