Hoyas End Regular Season on Low Note

In their last game of the regular season, the Georgetown women’s basketball team (14-15, 5-11 Big East) fell to South Florida (20-9, 9-7 Big East) 63-35 at McDonough Arena on Monday night. The Hoyas, who were coming off of a tough loss to Marquette on Saturday’s senior night, were looking to better their draw for the looming Big East Tournament.

The loss caps a long regular season for the Blue and Gray. GU was a young team to begin with, but a slew of injuries throughout the season led to inexperienced players receiving a lot of time, making it harder to ultimately rack up wins in a tough Big East conference.

The Blue and Gray, though, on this night were never really in it. As a team, Georgetown struggled to score and shot a horrid 9-54 from the field for the game. The Bulls outmatched the Hoyas in nearly every facet of the game and cruised to victory while depending on their stellar defense.

Hoyas’ Comeback Effort Comes Up Short on Senior Day

After the Georgetown women’s basketball team (14-14, 5-10 Big East) fell behind Marquette (14-14, 6-9 Big East) by as many as 13 points in the second half, senior shooting guard Sugar Rodgers — like she has many times in her career — led a surging comeback. Rodgers turned in another stellar performance for the Blue and Gray, leading all scorers with 21 points, but ultimately it wasn’t enough as the Hoyas fell to the Golden Eagles 51-48.

Before the game, the three seniors — Rodgers and centers Sydney Wilson and Vanessa Moore — were honored as a part of Senior Day. The three have led the Hoyas to NCAA tournament appearances the last three years. Rodgers is currently Georgetown’s all-time leading scorer with 2430 points.

Despite struggling from the field throughout the game, the Blue and Gray continued to fight and showed the will to win yet could not pull it out. The Hoyas had the ball down by three with 10 seconds left, but sophomore guard Jasmine Jackson missed the equalizing trey as time expired and Marquette walked away victorious.

Hoyas Fall in OT On the Road

Saturday, the Georgetown women’s basketball team (13-10, 4-5) traveled to Queens to take on conference opponent St. John’s (11-10, 5-4). In a game that started fast and strong for the Hoyas, it was ultimately the Red Storm who came out on top thanks to a quick transition game and a steady supply of forced turnovers. Early in the first half, senior shooting guard Sugar Rodgers paired up with freshman forward Dominique Vitalis to give the team a seven-point advantage. An 18-2 run to close out the first half, though, put St. John’s ahead by nine going into the break.

The second half turned into a back-and-forth battle between the two physical teams. The Blue and Gray fought back while the Red Storm tried to pull ahead, but it was Georgetown who took the lead with just 38 seconds left thanks to a three-point shot from freshman guard Katie McCormick. With little time remaining, the Red Storm charged down the court and hit a layup, sending the game to overtime tied up at 65.

Hoyas Eke Out Home Win Against Upset-Hungry Bearcats

The Georgetown women’s basketball team (13-8, 4-4 Big East) was able to fend off a Cincinnati squad (8-12, 0-7 Big East) that has yet to win a conference game on Tuesday night at McDonough Arena. Lockdown defense down the stretch and a crucial rebound by senior forward Vanessa Moore helped secure the win for GU against a Bearcat offense that shot 39.1% from 3-point range.

Senior shooting guard Sugar Rodgers recorded 17 points and five steals for the Hoyas and sophomore forward Brittany Horne added 15 points of her own. After the Blue and Gray jumped out to an early lead in the first half, Cincinnati fought back to cut the deficit to five at the half. Out of the locker room, the Bearcats had the hot hand this time, staging a 10-0 run four minutes into the second half.

From there, several ties and lead changes guaranteed that the final minutes of the game would not lack drama as both teams looked to gain momentum from the three-point line. Georgetown’s stingy defense prevented the Bearcats from gaining the upper hand down the stretch. With 3:24 left in regulation and the Hoyas up by two, Rodgers drained a pair of free throws to give the Blue and Gray a four-point lead they would not surrender. Moore then corralled an offensive rebound to ensure the victory and GU prevailed, forcing a demoralized Cincinnati team to reflect on a heartbreaking loss.

Hoyas Drop 3rd Straight, Fall to No. 2 Notre Dame

The Georgetown women’s basketball team (10-7, 1-3 Big East) was defeated by No. 2 Notre Dame (15-1, 4-0 Big East) 79-64 tonight in South Bend, Indiana.

Notre Dame opened the game with a 20-4 run and never looked back as they maintained a large lead throughout. The Hoyas were hampered by sloppy play in the opening minutes of the game, which allowed the Irish to secure the early lead.

However, with six minutes remaining in the first half, the Blue and Gray went on a 13-2 run. Sparked by timely shooting from sophomore guard Jasmine Jackson, junior forward Andrea White and freshman guard Katie McCormick, Georgetown narrowed the Irish advantage to 37-24.

Hoyas Win Big East Opener Behind Rodgers’ Triple-Double

It has been an historic season for senior shooting guard Sugar Rodgers, as she cements her reputation as the greatest women’s basketball player in Georgetown history. Saturday, Rodgers hit new heights, becoming the program’s first player to ever record a triple-double, as she tallied 33 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in the Hoyas’ 79-64 victory over Providence.

The Blue and Gray (10-4, 1-0 Big East) trailed early in their Big East opener in Rhode Island, as the Friars (5-9, 0-1 Big East) led 17-10 and then 30-20. Georgetown’s defense, however, kept the visitors in the game, and a late first-half run tied the game at 36 going into the break, from which point the Hoyas never looked back.
