What to Watch For: Basketball, Football and Beyonce

Basketball
After winning a 54-52 nail-biter over Cincinnati on Tuesday, the women’s basketball team will travel to Louisville for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.  Sugar Rodgers led three players in double figures Tuesday and the Blue and Gray (13-8, 4-4) look to continue that balance and strong defense.  The Hoyas will take on a No. 12 Cardinals team that has won four straight games and six of their last seven.  To follow the action, go to the Louisville website for a webcast and live stats.

The men, meanwhile, will take on St. John’s at the Verizon Center on Saturday at 4 p.m.  The Hoyas (15-4, 5-3) are feeling good after upsetting Louisville in a thriller and dominating Seton Hall on Wednesday. St. John’s (14-7, 6-3) is riding a five-game winning streak that they seek to extend on Saturday.

What to Watch For: Basketball Squads Begin Play, Soccer in Postseason

It’s a huge weekend in Georgetown sports, as some teams look to extend already successful seasons and others hope to begin them the right way:

Basketball

The moment all you Hoyas have been waiting for is finally here!  Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will begin their highly anticipated seasons tonight. The women, led by senior and three time All-American Sugar Rodgers, will host Sacred Heart in the first round of the Preseason NIT at 7 p.m. in McDonough Arena. Head Coach John Thompson III and the men, meanwhile, will face No. 10 Florida off the coast of Jacksonville in the Navy-Marine Corps Classic. Both teams will play again on Sunday, the women in a match to be determined by the outcome of their Friday game and the men in their home opener at 6:30 p.m. against Duquesne.

Soccer

The men’s soccer team will play Marquette in the semifinals of the Big East tournament today at 5 p.m. (tune into CBS Sports Network or listen on guhoyas.com) and, with a win, will advance to the championship game Sunday against either Notre Dame or Connecticut. The Hoyas have two All-Big East first-team and three second-team players, in addition to the league’s rookie of the year in striker Brandon Allen.

What To Watch For: Men’s Soccer in Quarters, Women into Championship Game

The football team may have a bye, but there is plenty of good futbol on the Georgetown schedule this weekend, if that’s your thing.

The No. 13 men’s soccer team hosts St. John’s at North Kehoe Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Big East tournament semifinal. The winner of that game will face whoever advances out of Marquette/Lousiville in the semifinals at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. GU is the 2-seed on its side of the bracket after sharing the regular-season crown with UConn but losing the tiebreaker. An NCAA berth is already locked up for the Hoyas, but a victory in the tournament would give them the easiest road to a very realistic Final Four trip.

Live on CBS Sports Network this afternoon, the women’s soccer team and Big East offensive player of the year Daphne Corboz took on South Florida in a Big East tournament semifinal, eventually winning in an epic, 5-4 shootout. The Blue and Gray defeated Depaul, 1-0, last weekend in the quarterfinals, and this week, five different members from this Georgetown team were named to an All-Big East team. With Friday’s win, Georgetown will now play either Marquette or Notre Dame in the finals on Sunday.

The volleyball team, meanwhile, will try to put a heartbreaking five-set loss to Syracuse on this past weekend’s Senior Day behind them as they travel to Cincinnati and Louisville.

What to Watch For: Women’s Soccer in Quarters, Football Seeks Turnaround

Tournament Time for Blue and Gray on Sunday

Big East regular season champs and ranked 14th in the country, women’s soccer will welcome DePaul to the Hilltop this weekend for a Big East Tournament quarterfinal. Georgetown lost its first Big East game of the season last time out, a 1-0 loss away to a Villanova team that DePaul just defeated 3-0 in the first round.

Football Hopes to Stop Skid at Lafayette

The football team – winless in Patriot League play and losers of four in a row – travels to Easton, Pa. for a matchup with Lafayette at 6 p.m. on Saturday night. Georgetown only has three more games on their schedule at this point, which means there are only three more chances to see the greatest defensive player in program history, linebacker Robert McCabe, suit up for GU.

Rematch With SHU Presents Big Opportunity on Men’s Side

The men’s soccer team will close out its best regular season in recent memory at 1 p.m. Saturday at home against Seton Hall, a team they beat 2-0 on Wednesday. The Hoyas have now won four straight since their only two losses of the season back-to-back in early October to Connecticut and Notre Dame. GU is one of four Big East teams currently ranked in the national top 10 ahead of the conference tournament, which is set to begin on Halloween.

What to Watch For: Football Opens League Play; Soccer Teams Face Big Tests

Fall is fully upon us now, and the in-season Georgetown sports teams are entering the heart of their schedules. Here’s what to keep an eye on this weekend:

Football Seeks Homecoming Redemption

After a 37-10 thrashing at the hands of Brown last time out, the football team (3-2, 0-0 Patriot League) now travels to the Bronx for a matchup with Fordham. The Rams nearly broke Lehigh’s 14-game conference winning streak a week ago, but the reigning conference champions walked off 34-31 winners thanks to a field goal in the dying seconds. Due to injuries, sophomore Stephen Skon will make his second straight start for the Hoyas at quarterback after having started the season third on the depth chart. The Hoyas started 3-2 against non-Patriot League opponents, but every game from here on out is huge if the Blue and Gray hope to make a historic FCS playoff appearance.

Key Conference Battles on the Pitch

The No. 11 women’s soccer team (11-1-1, 1-0-0 Big East) has a couple of important Big East matches on the road this weekend. On Friday night at 7 p.m., the Hoyas will kick off against Cincinnati, with their next fixture on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Louisville, airing live on the CBS Sports Network. In 34 career games, sophomore midfielder Daphne Corboz has scored 24 goals and six assists for 54 points, already good for eighth all-time in points in program history.

What to Watch For: A TV Milestone, A Big East Opener, and More

As we start to get back into the school-year swing of things here at Paranoia, this feature–adapted at the end of last semester from the (in my opinion, more boring) “Weekend Preview” of  yore–is finally making its return. Here, then, are what all Hoya fans should be watching out for this weekend:

Football at Princeton – Saturday, 7 p.m.

The big storyline on the weekend for Georgetown athletics is the football team’s game against the Tigers on Saturday night, which will be the first appearance in the history of the program on national television. Thanks to a deal with Princeton, ESPNU will be broadcasting the game with play-by-play from Capitals announcer Joe Beninati and color commentary from former NFL and UMass running back Rene Ingoglia.

The Hoyas are 2-1 on the season, having topped Davidson and Warner before losing a tough one to Yale at home last time out. Princeton, meanwhile, has only played once–a 17-14 loss at Lehigh–but the crowd and country-wide exposure will definitely give them a boost in their home opener. Make sure to tune in to see if GU can ruin the hosts’ day and make the most of their 3+ hours of fame.
