Men’s Lacrosse Squanders Lead in Loss to Villanova

The men’s lacrosse team’s rough season took another turn for the worse on Wednesday night as the visiting Villanova Wildcats (3-6,2-0) scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to leave Multi-Sport Facility 8-6 winners. The loss drops the Hoyas to 4-6 under first-year head coach Kevin Warne, and an NCAA tournament drought that stretches back to 2007 appears likely to continue.

GU was without captain Brian Casey — who was sidelined with a leg injury — but fellow senior Travis Comeau filled in nicely at attack with two goals. Redshirt sophomore Jake Haley, who has replaced opening day starter Alex Joyce as the go-to man in between the pipes, made 13 saves, but it was not enough as the offense was non-existent down the stretch.

Things were looking good for the home team when Reilly O’Connor, who has been Georgetown’s best offensive player this season, scored his 16th goal of the season to give the Blue and Gray a 5-2 lead with 10:16 left in the third quarter. It didn’t take long for Villanova to tie the game up with 3:09 to go in the third before O’Connor scored Georgetown’s final goal a minute later.

Baseball Takes Two of Three From South Florida To Even Up Big East Record

The Georgetown baseball team (17-9, 3-3 Big East) won two of three against South Florida in a series that featured two extra-inning games and an astounding outing from GU pitcher Matt Hollenbeck. The Blue and Gray took Wednesday’s game 1-0 in 13 innings before USF won its own extra-inning game 10-6 on Friday. However, the Hoyas rallied to win the series with a 7-2 victory on Saturday as Hollenbeck held the Bulls hitless for 5 2/3 of his six innings pitched.

Wednesday’s game saw an unlikely star emerge as freshman Evan Ryan scored the winning run in the 13th. The game was dominated by pitching as Georgetown starter Jack Vander Linden gave up just three hits in seven innings before and reliever Tim Davis put in an excellent shift, going 3 2/3 innings and giving up only one hit. Davis — who earned the win — entered with the bases loaded in the 10th inning but was able to escape the jam by forcing a key USF groundball.

As good as GU’s pitching was, the Bulls’ pitching staff matched the Hoyas’ blow-for-blow the entire game. Starter Jimmy Herget gave up only three hits in eight innings, and USF held strong until reliever Nolan Thomas’ wild pitch in the 13th inning allowed the pinch runner Ryan to score. The run was only the second of the season for Ryan, a specialist on the base path who has had zero at-bats this year.

Women’s Lacrosse Dominates Cincinnati in Big East Opener

Nine minutes into its conference opener, the No. 8 Georgetown’s women lacrosse team (6-2, 1-0 Big East) found itself behind 3-2 against Cincinnati (4-3, 0-1 Big East). The Hoyas had never lost to the Bearcats, but they seemed to be in for a tough contest early.

Well, any fears of an upset were assuaged quickly and defiantly as the Blue and Gray ended the game on a staggering 19-0 run to easily prevail 21-3 over Cincinnati. GU utilized an impressive combination of selfless offense and physically overwhelming defense to dominate the Bearcats over the game’s final 51 minutes.

Georgetown’s early season pattern of a balanced offensive attack continued Friday, as 13 different Hoyas put the ball in the back of the net. Junior midfielder Hannah Franklin led the way with a hat trick, while six other teammates also scored multiple goals. Freshman attack Corinne Etchison added one goal and three assists of her own on the day.

After GU fell behind, junior midfielder Kelyn Freedman tied the score up off a nifty assist from Etchison. Etchison then found midfielder Erin Lovett less than a minute later to give the Hoyas a one-goal advantage.

Georgetown never looked back from that point on, particularly in a dominant finish to the first half; over the final five minutes before intermission, the Blue and Gray netted four goals to enter the break with a commanding 14-3 lead.

Georgetown Upset, Outclassed by No. 15 Seed Florida Gulf Coast

Screen Shot 2013-03-22 at 9.35.37 PMYou really want to read about this right now? Are you a Syracuse fan or something? No? Then stop reading, and go watch a Will Ferrell movie or listen to sad music or something. I don’t drink myself, but you can go right ahead and do that too. You deserve it.

Alright, you’re really still here? Fine, then I guess I’m kind of obligated to do a bit of recapping for you.

In short, junior point guard Markel Starks showed up to the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia for the second-seeded Hoyas’ first-round matchup with the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast. He did so alone.

In what on paper should have been a breeze for the second-seeded Hoyas, Starks put up 23 points and six assists to account for more than a third of Georgetown’s points in what ended a lopsided 78-68 loss. Unanimous Big East player of the year and Wooden Award finalist Otto Porter Jr.? 5-of-17 from the floor, 13 points, no spark. Freshman guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera? Still cold: 3-for-11, six points.

Women’s Lacrosse Eases Past Stanford on Road

The No. 11 Georgetown women’s lacrosse team (4-0) continued its undefeated run to begin the season by topping No. 18 Stanford (2-2) 15-8 on Tuesday. The Blue and Gray continued their strong play in the young season, as everything clicked for the Hoyas in what appeared to be a tough road test.

Early on, GU looked like it was in trouble after the Cardinal built a 3-1 lead within the game’s first ten minutes. The Hoyas’ lone bright spot in the slow start was sophomore attack Caroline Tarzian, who continued to produce on offense with her first of five goals on the day.

Tarzian’s big day marked the second time the New York native has tallied five scores in three contests for the Blue and Gray after doing the same against Towson at home ten days ago. The sophomore continues to be an offensive leader for Georgetown, which has scored 11 or more goals in all four games this season.

Hoyas End Regular Season on Low Note

In their last game of the regular season, the Georgetown women’s basketball team (14-15, 5-11 Big East) fell to South Florida (20-9, 9-7 Big East) 63-35 at McDonough Arena on Monday night. The Hoyas, who were coming off of a tough loss to Marquette on Saturday’s senior night, were looking to better their draw for the looming Big East Tournament.

The loss caps a long regular season for the Blue and Gray. GU was a young team to begin with, but a slew of injuries throughout the season led to inexperienced players receiving a lot of time, making it harder to ultimately rack up wins in a tough Big East conference.

The Blue and Gray, though, on this night were never really in it. As a team, Georgetown struggled to score and shot a horrid 9-54 from the field for the game. The Bulls outmatched the Hoyas in nearly every facet of the game and cruised to victory while depending on their stellar defense.
