Men’s Lacrosse Big East Power Rankings: Villanova Undefeated in Conference Play

1. Villanova (4-6, 3-0)

All six of the Wildcats’ losses have come to ranked teams, but they’ve been perfect through their conference schedule with victories over Syracuse, Georgetown and Rutgers. Senior attack Jack Rice has an impressive 20 goals through the team’s first 10 games.

2. No. 4 Notre Dame (8-2, 2-1)

The Irish should be undefeated, but they are only 2-2 at home with losses to unranked Hofstra and St. John’s. Notre Dame has one of the best goalies in the country in senior John Kemp, and freshman attack Matt Kavanagh is leading the team in scoring with 19 goals and 10 assists. The Fighting Irish close out the regular season with the Hoyas, the Wildcats and the Orange.

Men’s Lacrosse Squanders Lead in Loss to Villanova

The men’s lacrosse team’s rough season took another turn for the worse on Wednesday night as the visiting Villanova Wildcats (3-6,2-0) scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to leave Multi-Sport Facility 8-6 winners. The loss drops the Hoyas to 4-6 under first-year head coach Kevin Warne, and an NCAA tournament drought that stretches back to 2007 appears likely to continue.

GU was without captain Brian Casey — who was sidelined with a leg injury — but fellow senior Travis Comeau filled in nicely at attack with two goals. Redshirt sophomore Jake Haley, who has replaced opening day starter Alex Joyce as the go-to man in between the pipes, made 13 saves, but it was not enough as the offense was non-existent down the stretch.

Things were looking good for the home team when Reilly O’Connor, who has been Georgetown’s best offensive player this season, scored his 16th goal of the season to give the Blue and Gray a 5-2 lead with 10:16 left in the third quarter. It didn’t take long for Villanova to tie the game up with 3:09 to go in the third before O’Connor scored Georgetown’s final goal a minute later.

Kevin Warne Named Georgetown Lacrosse Coach

The national search for Georgetown’s men’s lacrosse coach ended in the D.C. area Tuesday morning, when the Hoyas named Maryland assistant Kevin Warne as their next head coach.

Warne has been on Maryland’s staff the last two seasons, both of which saw the Terrapins reach the NCAA championship game. Maryland also defeated Georgetown both years, hanging 20-8 and 16-11 losses on the Hoyas in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

“Kevin’s commitment to student-athlete welfare and his passion for the game makes him the perfect person to take over our lacrosse program at this time,“ Georgetown Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed said in a statement.

Warne fills the vacancy left by Dave Urick, the legendary coach who retired in July after 23 years with the Hoyas. Filling Urick’s shoes will be a challenging task for any coach, since Urick won 223 games and never had a losing season on the Hilltop.

Rapid Recap: Men’s Lax Wins a Special One Over Rutgers on Senior Day

The last game for the Georgetown men’s lacrosse team (7-6, 3-3 Big East) on Friday night did not have a Big East Tournament berth on the line, nor was the team looking to bolster their résumé for the NCAAs, with the tourney already far out of reach. But to say that it didn’t matter is to be wrong on so many different levels.

In fact, in a contest won by the Blue and Gray 13-8, the simple box score does not even begin to do the game’s impact justice.

The Hoyas faced a 2-0 hole in the early going of the first quarter before junior attack Brian Casey got his team on the board at the 6:13 mark. A goal by Rutgers to start the second restored the Scarlet Knights’ two-goal cushion, but two straight by Georgetown in response to end the half assured a tie game at the intermission.

Coming out of the locker room, GU broke it wide open. Continue reading

Men’s Lacrosse Power Rankings: Dominant ND Remains on Top in Big East

Across the world of college lacrosse this week, Duke won the ACC tournament, Brown upset Cornell, and Navy came out of nowhere to dominate Johns Hopkins 8-2, while Loyola and UMass remained undefeated at #1 and #2, respectively, in the latest coaches’ poll. The sadly Hoya-less field for the inaugural Big East Tournament has also been set: Notre Dame will play St. Johns, and hosts Villanova will play Syracuse in the semis on May 3rd ahead of the championship on May 5th.

1 – Notre Dame (10-1, 5-0)

The Irish clinched the regular season title and the number one seed in the conference tournament with a 10-7 win at Villanova this past Saturday. Senior attack Sean Rogers led the way for Notre Dame with three goals and one assist, as eight different players scored in the winning effort. The Irish, ranked 3rd in the country, have now won ten in a row and have no doubt been the class of the conference all year; their only blemish is a 4-3 overtime loss to Penn St. in the second game of the season.

Remaining Schedule – vs. Syracuse 4/28, Big East Tournament

2 – Villanova (8-5, 4-1)

Villanova has to be extremely disappointed after Saturday’s loss to Notre Dame, in which they scored four unanswered goals in the opening ten minutes before failing to get on the board at all in the second and third quarters. The Wildcats’ drought allowed the Irish to go on an 8-0 run that would ultimately prove insurmountable. If seedings hold, though, 13th-ranked ‘Nova will get a chance to avenge this latest loss in the Big East Tournament finals.

Remaining Schedule – @ Providence 4/28, Big East Tournament Continue reading
