Women’s Lacrosse Dominates Cincinnati in Big East Opener

Nine minutes into its conference opener, the No. 8 Georgetown’s women lacrosse team (6-2, 1-0 Big East) found itself behind 3-2 against Cincinnati (4-3, 0-1 Big East). The Hoyas had never lost to the Bearcats, but they seemed to be in for a tough contest early.

Well, any fears of an upset were assuaged quickly and defiantly as the Blue and Gray ended the game on a staggering 19-0 run to easily prevail 21-3 over Cincinnati. GU utilized an impressive combination of selfless offense and physically overwhelming defense to dominate the Bearcats over the game’s final 51 minutes.

Georgetown’s early season pattern of a balanced offensive attack continued Friday, as 13 different Hoyas put the ball in the back of the net. Junior midfielder Hannah Franklin led the way with a hat trick, while six other teammates also scored multiple goals. Freshman attack Corinne Etchison added one goal and three assists of her own on the day.

After GU fell behind, junior midfielder Kelyn Freedman tied the score up off a nifty assist from Etchison. Etchison then found midfielder Erin Lovett less than a minute later to give the Hoyas a one-goal advantage.

Georgetown never looked back from that point on, particularly in a dominant finish to the first half; over the final five minutes before intermission, the Blue and Gray netted four goals to enter the break with a commanding 14-3 lead.

Women’s Lacrosse Eases Past Stanford on Road

The No. 11 Georgetown women’s lacrosse team (4-0) continued its undefeated run to begin the season by topping No. 18 Stanford (2-2) 15-8 on Tuesday. The Blue and Gray continued their strong play in the young season, as everything clicked for the Hoyas in what appeared to be a tough road test.

Early on, GU looked like it was in trouble after the Cardinal built a 3-1 lead within the game’s first ten minutes. The Hoyas’ lone bright spot in the slow start was sophomore attack Caroline Tarzian, who continued to produce on offense with her first of five goals on the day.

Tarzian’s big day marked the second time the New York native has tallied five scores in three contests for the Blue and Gray after doing the same against Towson at home ten days ago. The sophomore continues to be an offensive leader for Georgetown, which has scored 11 or more goals in all four games this season.

Hoyas Even Up Record With Win Over Bucknell

The Georgetown football team (5-5, 2-2 Patriot League) crawled its way back to .500 after winning a 10-3 defensive slugfest Saturday afternoon against Bucknell (2-8, 0-5 Patriot League) at MultiSport Facility.

Freshman quarterback Kyle Nolan went down on the team’s second series and was replaced by sophomore Stephen Skon. The Long Island gunslinger did enough to earn a win, completing 19 of 29 passes for 231 yards, with one touchdown and an interception.

“Our kids came with a great and aggressive attitude today,” Head Coach Kevin Kelly. “I’m really proud of our guys — their back was to the wall, and they fought back.”

GU looked like the fresher and stronger of the two sides from the onset. The defense, in what became a consistent pattern, forced a three-and-out and a quick punt on Bucknell’s opening drive.

A strong return by sophomore wide receiver Kevin Macari then set the Hoyas up with prime field position at the Bison 32-yard line. Taking advantage of a roughing-the-passer penalty, the Blue and Gray were set up with 1st & goal, but Nolan could not find the end zone. Nonetheless, a 20-yard Matt Maczura field goal was good, putting Georgetown up 3-0 almost right away.

Win on the Road at Lafayette Puts Football Back on Track

The Georgetown football team (4-5, 1-2 Patriot League) defeated Lafayette (5-3, 2-1 Patriot League), 20-17, on the road last night to stop a four-game losing streak. For the first time since their nationally televised win over Princeton, the Hoyas were finally able to emerge victorious in a back-and-forth game that went down to the wire.

In his second collegiate start, fourth-string freshman quarterback Kyle Nolan finished 15-for-32 for 193 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

However, the real stars of the game for the Blue and Gray came on the defensive side of the ball. After surrendering 57 points last week to Colgate, Georgetown’s defense responded in a big way by forcing seven turnovers, including the game-clinching interception by freshman cornerback Cameron Gable with 32 seconds remaining.

Junior safety Stephen Atwater had a career day, contributing one interception, one fumble recovery, one tackle for a loss and three pass breakups, while stud senior linebacker Robert McCabe had another impressive performance with 16 tackles, including one for a loss.

Football Loses Heartbreaker to No. 10 Lehigh

In a wild, back-and-forth contest on Saturday, Georgetown’s football team (3-4, 0-1 Patriot League) put up a valiant fight but fell just short against 10th-ranked Lehigh (7-0, 1-0 Patriot League).

The Hoyas forced seven turnovers against the Mountain Hawks, but the offense could not take advantage often enough in the 17-14 defeat.

“It’s a team game,” Head Coach Kevin Kelly said. “The defense did a heck of a job against a very good offense. We didn’t score when we had the opportunities. To me, the difference in the game was the red zone.”

Early on, the Hoyas looked like the stronger side of the two–taking advantage of a short field off of a Lehigh fumble, the Hoyas got on the board first with a two-yard run by junior Nick Campanella.

However, both teams settled in and the defenses held the game at a deadlock for the next 18 minutes until the Mountain Hawks broke through. Off of a Hoya fumble, Lehigh drove the ball and tied the game at 7 with a 1-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter.

Close Loss to Fordham Makes it Two Straight for GU

In another down-to-the-wire finish, the Georgetown football team (3-3) suffered a heartbreaking defeat on Saturday, dropping a close 38-31 contest at Fordham (4-2).

Sophomore Stephen Skon had an up-and-down game in his second collegiate start, but he showed much improvement from his rough outing against Brown. The Long Island native finished the game 18-of-34 with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

After allowing an early field goal, the Hoyas were the first team to find the end zone midway through the first quarter. Set up with good field position after a muffed punt by the Rams, the Blue and Gray used a 32-yard strike from Skon to sophomore wide receiver Kevin Macari to set up a first-and-goal. On the very next play, Macari ran it in from four yards out to give Georgetown an early 7-3 lead.

However, the Rams responded immediately with a lethal passing attack that kept the Hoyas’ secondary on its heels all game, driving right back downfield and regaining a 10-7 lead.

Both teams struggled to find room on offense for much of the second quarter, and after a couple of field goals, the Blue and Gray went into the locker room trailing 16-10.
